Quick answer
The Saver’s Credit is worth 50%, 20% or 10% of up to $2,000 in retirement contributions ($4,000 if married filing jointly) — a maximum credit of $1,000, or $2,000 for joint filers. For tax year 2026 the credit phases out at AGI above $80,500 (married filing jointly), $60,375 (head of household) and $40,250 (single). Tax year 2026 is generally the credit’s final year: starting in 2027 it is replaced by the federal Saver’s Match, though a Saver’s Credit for ABLE-account contributions continues on Form 8880.
Key takeaways
- The credit is nonrefundable — it can reduce your tax to zero but not below.
- Contributions to 401(k), IRA, 403(b), 457, SIMPLE, SEP and ABLE accounts can qualify.
- From TY2027, the Saver’s Match deposits up to $1,000 directly into your retirement account instead.

Who can claim it
You must be 18 or older, not a full-time student, and not claimed as a dependent on someone else’s return. Claim it with Form 8880; recent distributions from retirement accounts can reduce the eligible contribution amount.
After 2026: the Saver’s Match
For taxable years beginning after December 31, 2026, the SECURE 2.0 law replaces this credit with a Saver’s Match: the Treasury matches 50% of up to $2,000 in contributions (up to $1,000), paid directly into a traditional IRA or eligible retirement plan rather than off your tax bill. The match phases out over $41,000–$71,000 of income (married filing jointly) and $20,500–$35,500 (single), indexed. Roth accounts cannot receive the match. Per the IRS Form 8880 instructions, the match will be claimed on a separate form beginning with 2027 returns filed in 2028, while Form 8880 remains for ABLE-contribution credits.
Plan the timing: TY2026 contributions still use the credit above; TY2027 contributions fall under the match rules. IRA contributions for 2026 can generally be made until the 2027 filing deadline.
